Learning outside the classroom

Learning outside the classroom

At North Star 82 pupils have weekly opportunities to learn outside the classroom within our beautiful grounds.

This outdoor programme aims to provide a supportive environment where children with SEMH needs can develop social skills, emotional literacy and improve mental well-being. This programme aims to engage children by providing the benefits of Forest School, horticulture and animal welfare activities, complemented by construction and enterprise components. The programme can accommodate whole classes or be tailored for outdoor interventions with small groups of up to 6 children.

Forest School is an educational approach that focuses on outdoor learning, primarily in natural environments like forests and woodlands. Originating in Scandinavia, it emphasises child-centred, experiential learning where children explore and engage with nature. The programme promotes physical activity, emotional well-being, social skills, and environmental awareness.

Key activities include building shelters, using tools, observing wildlife, and creative play with natural materials. Through regular sessions, Forest School helps children develop confidence, resilience, and a deep connection with the natural world, fostering a lifelong appreciation for the environment.
